BE VI clinches the victory in a nail biting finale

“Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt”

-          Special Olympic Motto

Hands joined for prayers.Legs trembling with apprehension.Minds choked with suspense.

Well, Well, Well. We aren’t talking about Ekta Kapoor’s saas bahu soap. We are talking about religion of India. Yes, we are talking about cricket. And we are talking about the final match of the BIT CAVORTS 09 Cup, which couldn’t be more exciting than this one. Cricket is the game of uncertainties and day 3 was a perfect example of this. Be it the league match, the semi final or the final, the game was played at its best and each team gave its best shot which glued the spectators with their seats for the entire day.

MATCH 1: A perfect start for the day…….

The started with the last fixture of the league round between MBA II and MCA I. MCA I batted first and set a gigantic target of 177 runs for the opponent team. A ferocious knock of 51 runs on just 11 balls by Rajat left the MBA II clueless about the what has been happening on the ground. Kunal also scored half century(51 runs) and helped his team reach the huge score. In reply MBA II didn’t provide any stiff resistance got all out for just 107 runs. MCA I won by 69 and entered the second semifinal to face BE I, who had made it to the semis on day 2.

But the day had much more drama in its womb to be delivered in the semi final and the final, which one could foresee by now.

MATCH 2: Bowlers’ day out…..

The second semifinal between MCA I and BE I turned out to be a match low on score but high on thriller. Batting first, the whole team of BE I was back to the pavilion at a lilliputian score of 83 runs due to splendid bowling performance by Nitesh and Rajat. But as is the saying that fortune favors the braves, BE I didn’t lose hopes and gave in their everything to get back into the match. Magnificent bowling by Saksham and Venki, supported with some tight overs by Amit and Aditya didn’t allow MCA I to see the daylight and bowled them out on just 77 runs which also happened to be the lowest total of the tournament. Thus, BE I won the match by 6 runs and booked their seats in the finals to clash with BE IV.

The day had already witnessed both the extremes of the game. At one end we had some brilliant knocks by bat and the highest score of the tournament while at the other end we witnessed intelligent bowling performances restricting opponents to the lowest totals scored so far.

MATCH  3: ( The grand finale ) OMG !!! Can this happen……

Everyone, including the players, umpires, scorers, editorial team, spectators and onlookers, was all set for the long awaited moment to happen, the final match between BE I and BE IV to decide who the champion of BIT is. Finally the time had come. BE I won the toss and decided to bat first. Amit and Saksham gave a strong start to the batting side. They contributed 93 runs on board before Amit(30 runs) was caught by Ritesh on Amrendra’s bowling at mid-on. Soon after this, Saksham also got out when he was cought behind wickets by Viren on Praveen’s ball. BE VI bounced back with the fall of the openers and Ravi( 4 wickets ) collapsed the middle order of BE I. The team got all out for a defendable total of 136 runs in 13 overs as it was a 16 over match. In reply, BE IV lost an early wicket of captain Amrendra. Viren and Nikhil had a 50 run partnership for 1st wicket and gave an impetus to the team’s score and victory seemed easy for the chasing team. But the destiny had something else in her mind. Sudden collapse of the batting line up of BE IV poised the match equally between both the teams. Umpires Rahul Bansal and Ankur Mathur did a commendable job as they maintained their cool and made fair and correct decisions in the pressure cooker scenario where the appeals and expectations were raining like Tsunami. BE IV required 70 runs with 5 overs remaining and 4 wickets in hand. Amit, who charged the ball all round the ground and Varun, who kept the wicket intact at other end, played sensibly and lifted the score at a level where BE IV required 19 runs off 6 balls. Captains started scratching their grey matter while the players tried to calm themselves in the electrifying encounter. Finally, Saksham was given the ball to bowl the last over and Varun hit the ball for a six on his very first ball and got out on the next ball. Spectators came off the edges of their seats. Amit had the strike as well as the expectations. But next in offering was a dot ball for him. Supporters of BE I jumped off their feets as BE IV now needed 13 runs of 3 balls, which was very difficult to achieve looking at the current form of Amit. Next ball is bowled, and what do we see, the ball is sent to the boundary for 4 by Amit. Yes, match isn’t over yet. Environment is tensed. Players are clueless what to do. Mind battle between the batsman and the bowler is on. 2 balls and 9 runs, who knows what the next two balls had in offering? Saksham delivers the ball and Amit connets it to send the ball outside the boundary flying high. YES, it is a six. Now, a final cant be better than this one. 1 ball and 3 runs required to win. Fielding side captain sent most of the fielders to boundary but Amit has something else going on in his mind. The question in the air is – Next is what?? Ekta Kapoor can you tell us?? No even she is helpless in this case. Last and the decisive ball is bowled, Amit hits the ball high and the climax ….it was a six. BE IV had finish off this tournament in style. They proved they have the mettle and deserve to be champions.

All which one can hear is the celebration roars of the supporters of BE IV. Thus, BE IV becomes the champion.

Although officially BE IV will lift the cup, but the real winner is this great game, the gentlemen’s game, winner is the spirit of cricket, winner is the spirit of sportsmanship.Winners are the people behind the scene like Anhsul Mathur, Sabyasachi and their whole team who organized the matches in a hustle free manner. Winners are the teams who put in their effort to make the event possible and  The winner is our college fraternity who creates such winners. Congratulations BIT.

While writing this report, I thought that what did we learn from these matches, from the fight back by BE I, from the bounce back by BE IV in the last overs, and these wording of our former prime minister, Mr. Atal Bihari Vajpeyee, struck my mind

“Haar nahi manoonga
Raar nahi thanunga
Kaal ke kapal pe likhta mitata hoon
Geet naya gaata hoon, Geet naya gaata hoon”

- Ashish Galav

BASKETBALL:

The third and final day of Cavort’s ’09 started with the semi-finals of the boys basketball teams. The teams to play were BE VIII against BBA IV and BCA VI against BBA II.

BE VIII Vs BBA IV

What a match! This match was one which kept everybody’s heart racing from the minute the match started till the last whistle was blown. The closest match of the tournament, this match had everything any spectator could ask for in a game. Thrill, excitement and a nail-biting finish. This game had it all! It started with an early basket by Ankit for BE VIII, followed by a basket by Abhiskekh Doodwal from BBA IV, the very same minute. Another basket by Abhishekh followed, and just as quick, a basket by Chinmay evened the score again. The first half had two more baskets by Abhishekh and Aman for BBA IV.

The second half started with a set of consecutive baskets by Chinmay for BE VIII, making the score 9-8, and taking the lead. A free throw by Ankit followed by another basket by Abhishekh, and the score was even again. As time started running out, the game became all the more exciting, and the result was totally unpredictable as both the teams showed incredible potential and amazing teamwork A basket by Ankit for BE VIII and yet another basket by the top scorer for BBA IV, i.e. Abhishekh, brought the score to an even, yet again! With merely seconds left, Chinmay from BE VIII scored a free throw making the score 13-12 just in time, taking his team to the finals, with that 1 point! A spectacular match with incredible performances by both the teams, i.e. a game well played.
    BBA II Vs BCA VI
Another exciting match, this game too had excellent performances by all the players. BCA VI seized the advantage at the beginning but BBA II was not one to be beaten so
easily. By the fourth minute the scores were 6-0, in favor of BCA VI.
The infuriated BBA II team which had had cake walks over the previous
games then started charging. Successions of baskets were seen coming
from the BBA II side; however, the BCA VI team continued to play
fervently. They gave good opposition to the nonpareil team. Scores
were 25-13 at the end of the first half. The match was quite tight for
the second half with five free throws (5x2) being awarded to the BCA
VI team. BCA VI put up a good fight but they could not add the winning
title to their name. The game ended 41-32 with BBA II moving on to the
finals of the basketball tournament.
The Finals!!   And finally we reached the much awaited finals of the basketball tournament, BE VIII against BBA II. The match started with continuous baskets by Mohit and Garvit for BBA II, taking the score to 15-0, after which Ankit from BE VIII broke the silence with two baskets making the score 4-15. The first half saw two more baskets by Ramanuj for BBA II and a free throw scored by Chinmay for BE VIII. The second half started with a few baskets from BE VIII, by Chinmay, Rishabh and Ankit, and another long set of baskets by BBA II, by Mohit, Garvit and Ramanuj. It was a tight match as both the teams tried relentlessly to give their best. A huge number of close misses by the BE VIII team, proved to be of great advantage to BBA II. The match ended with a set of continuous baskets for BE VIII, scored by Rishabh, but despite the amazing performance given by BE VIII, BBA II won the tournament with a score of 25-44.   And with this, the three day long basketball tournament came to an end. Marvelous performances by all the teams with a remarkable potential for the game, these players proved they had what it takes to be team players. Personally, covering these matches was more of a thrill and pleasure than we had anticipated and the both of us are happy to have been a part of the tournament in our own way. All in all, an overwhelming success!

BADMINTON:

“Victory always starts in the head. It’s a state of mind. It then spreads with such radiance and such  affirmations that destiny can do nothing but obey”
It’s wonderful how only a few words can summarize all that I can possibly say ahead. But what would be this article if not without the names of
those who are the inspiration behind this beautiful saying. Pardon me, for wasting time delving into the beauty of the situation, but the sheer glory
of all the winners has definitely brought about a very philosophical start to this article.
So , getting to the realities of the day. The day was not just another one of those days with a “gazillion” matches’ tiring the players and
coordinators out but this was a day of just a few matches doing the trick. This was a day of semi finals and finals with the selected players out of
the massive lot of champions. Think about that!
The events for today games took place outside the college premises , in an indoor badminton court, at the OTS. It was a big step towards the
reduction of all the problems being faced by the players initially and also was an apt location for the semi finals and the finals. A huge thanks to
the management of the OTS for providing the location on such a short notice.
Now,  quickly coming to the games of the day. Here go all the victory runs…

GIRLS SINGLES:

SEMI FINALS:

The semi final was played between Ruchika Lahoti and Shivaranjini Popli. The first set started with Shivaranjini taking a massive lead with the
score reading a 5-1 in the first few minutes of the match.  Ruchika soon caught up moving her score steadily ahead soon to reach a 4-6. Somehow
Ruchika’s luck didn’t seem to have been favouring since Shivaranjini gave her no scope of improvement till the game point where the score lay at 14
-4. Ruchika tried her best even in these wee hours of the game and brought up her score. But the final score read a 15-8 declaring Shivaranjini as
the winner.  The second was much better for Ruchika, infact she leveled her score with Shivaranjini at 14-14 extending the game to a 17 point
game. However Shivaranjini too the lead again at the right time pushing her  way into the finals, though not effortlessly in this set.

FINALS:

The finals took place between Ananya Bhaskar who had been declared a finalist previously and Shivaranjini Popli who as mentioned above had
defeated Ruchika Lahoti to make it in. The first set began with Shivaranjini diving head on into a scoring spree with the scores soon at 4-0. Ananya
took to the initial loss gracefully steadily moving her score up, and finally almost balancing it out with Shivaranjini at 7-9. The game from here
moved at a similar pace until Shivaranjini sped up at the last minute making Ananya lose the first set to her at a score of 15-12. The second set
somehow didnt see much of Ananya with Shivaranjini beating her with a final score of 15-6.

WINNER OF GIRLS SINGLES: SHIVARANJINI POPLI (BE VIII ECE)

BOYS SINGLES:

SEMI FINALS:

The semi final was played between Apoorv Prakash and Raj Meena. The first set began with a lot of vigour from both ends but Apoorv soon picked
up a pace leaving Raj behind and finally defeating him at a 15-6. The second set called for a better performance from Raj with the scored getting
leveled at places till the scoreboard read 8-8. A very even match with both sides striving hard to get an edge. From this point onwards though,
Apoorv gained velocity and shot to an effortless 12. Though Raj tried hard to catch up increasing his score in between to a 10 but soon enough the
game point was declared by Apoorv and it didnt take long for him to acquire the position as a finalist against Rahul Churiwala.

FINALS:

The finals took place between Rahul Churiwala and Apoorv Prakash. A very intersting match considering both the players happen to be unbelievably
talented in this particular field and have amazing sports man spirit. Infact it was hard to cheer for one without offending the other. The game was
pretty much left to its fate without any questions. The first set was more about powerplay from Apoorv with him charging with a 6-1. Rahul took no
time getting back into form but the score had now increased in its difficulty level making it hard to catch up. At the end of the first set the final
scores read 21-12 in Apoorv's favour. The second set initially seemed to be running in the directions of Rahul but Apoorv caught up making it a 6-6.
The rest of the match moved at exactly the same pace ie none letting the other move ahead and the scores levelling frequently. However after at a
score of 16-12 with Apoorv at lead the reast of the game pretty much went to him with the final scores at 21-16.

WINNER OF BOYS SINGLES: APOORV PRAKASH

GIRLS DOUBLES:

SEMI FINALS:

The match for the semi finals was Srishti Dutta and Megha Jain vs Ruchika Lahoti and Anukriti Phophalia. In the first set it was rather evident that
the match was majorly dominated by the Ruchika-Anukriti pair with them jumping at an initial high score of 5-0. Srishti-Megha couldnt really match
up that well though random attempts were made frequently in the game. The final scoresheet read 15-4. A truly amazing win by the Ruchika-
Anukriti pair. The second set went about with Srishti-Megha not giving any space for an initial jump. With the game point at 14-9 Srishti-Megha
stood no chance and their next hit at the net gave their opponents a green signal to the finals.

FINALS:

The finals were between the pairs Ananya-Shivaranjini and Ruchika-Anukriti. The first set was a very close match between the two pairs with the
scores continously levellin till 14-14 where the game was extended to a 17 point game. Here the scores levelled again at 15-15 extending the game
again to a 19 point game. From this point onwards the Ananya-Shivaranjini duo took the game under their control and left the final scores at 19-16,
henceforth winning the first set. The second set was close again but this time Ruchika-Anukriti were in no mood for a loss and sped their way to
victory with another close record 13-15. Therefore the match continued to the third and final decider set where the scores met again and again till
12-12 from where Ananya-Shivaranjin closed the scoring doors for them winning the doubles with 14-12. This series did keep everyone at the edge
of their seats and turned out to be one of the most entertaining matches of the day.

WINNERS OF GIRLS DOUBLES: ANANYA BHASKAR AND SHIVARANJINI POPLI

BOYS DOUBLES:

FINALS:

This match was definitely the most awaited match of the day and not only did I get an answer to my "why so?" but the response was so astounding
that it was making the entire crowd cheer wildly at every hit and miss by any of the four! No one was bothered about the results of the match!
When the players are not (which atleast they seemed to be...their friendly gestures towards each other did give everyone a hard time choosing
sides) why should we? The teams were Chinmay Nanda and Rahul Churiwala (CR in further reference) and Apoorv Prakash and Amrendra Kumar(AA
in further reference). The first set was a sequence of scoring and catching up from both ends with the scores 10-7(CR leading) as I bent down to
write and 10-8 as I looked up. The shuttlecock was being sprung across the court at such a speed that it was impossible to keep track of the cock
and the score. Thankfully after a whole lot of confusion they chose to call their own scores. The mid scores went like 14(CR)-11,15-11,12-15. The
game suddenly took a leap forward with a burst of scoring from each side ending the first set at 21-17. CR win! Second set was another one with
an attitude like the first, fast paced and with both team scores getting tied at several occasions. At 11-11 AA's pick up speed and race to the end
of the match leaving CR's behind with a final score of 14-21. AA win! Coming to the third set. Another set with the scores levelled up till 5-5. The
break to the initial monotony is given by AA's with their scores jumping higher and higher every second. The final scores were 15-21 making AA the
undisputed winners. What a match and what a victory!

WINNERS OF BOYS DOUBLES: APOORV PRAKASH AND AMRENDRA KUMAR

MIXED DOUBLES:

SEMI FINALS:

This was Apoorv Prakash and Shivaranjini Popli vs Ruchika Lahoti and Sudarshan. The first set started off giving everyone an idea of how fast
paced this match would be. In a matter of seconds the scores had tied at 3-3. Apoorv-Shivaranjini didnt take long to switch the match in their
favour with the final scores as 15-4. The second set called for a similar set though a slightly better one for Ruchika-Sudarshan, though Apoorv-
Shivaranjini bagged the place in the finals easily with with the final score entry as 15-6.

FINALS:

Apoorva Prakash and Shivaranjini Popli battled against Rahul Churiwala and Priya Nayar in the finals. The first set was started off rather evenly
with them both moving at a gradual pace towards the 10 mark. After this though Apoorv-Shivaranjini didnt give their opponents any scope for
further improvement. The scores at the end of the first set read 21-10. The second set got no better with a similar story to say again. The final
scores in this set were 21-12, declaring Apoorv and Shivaranjini as the winners.

WINNERS OF MIXED DOUBLES: APOORV PRAKASH AND SHIVARANJINI POPLI

So,this was basically it. An amazing end to an amazing day! I have nothing new to say to all of you here since the names in golden(wish i could do
that) say it all but there is something I would like to say to all you players since this article hasnt been very conversant with you all. So here goes...

In the next couple of years (or later) some of you will be at your new jobs, some will be off to some college, some will be in the service, and some
of you may still be trying to find your way in life. No matter where you are at, at some point in the future you will run into someone who was here
at todays game, whether it was a "fan", a teammate, or even a member of the other team. No matter who it is, you will share a moment in the future
with someone and they will bring up todays game.
The question is: What causes them to bring up todays game? What did you do today to cause them to remember today's game? What memory did
you create today that lasted through years of time in this person's mind? Was it the game winning score? Was it a record setting feat? Think about
it! What did you do that day that caused someone in your future to remember????

The time had come today afternoon to go out there and make some great memories for yourself and for your team! And YOU did it brilliantly!

TABLE TENNIS:

The wrap up of Cavorts’ 09 saw some scorching hot action on the TT table again as PING PONG pitted the best TT players and teams against each other.

Women’s Singles Finals

The day kicked off with a close encounter between Shivranjani Popli and Niharika Gupta.  The final battle was fierce but Niharika held her nerves and her serves to wrap up the final title by a straight 21-17  21-19 victory.

Men’s Singles Finals

The Singles Final saw the best match of the day with the meeting of Jeevitesh and Mohit Singh. Jeevitesh showed his full repertoire by clinching his second victory of the final day in a 2:1 victory over the superb Mohit Singh.

Women’s Doubles Finals

Reema and Shailja (BE III) despite their laudable efforts lost a resurgent Niharika Gupta and Ananya(BE IV)  who hit a string of forehand shots. Keeping the rallies moving, they ran out 21-17  21-19 straight victors.

Men’s Doubles Finals

The intriguing Doubles featured Anshul and Vinayak against Jivitesh and Anshul who proved to be a formidable combination which eased their way to the title with the battle going all the way to 21-13 when a deuce was called befor jivitesh just edged it. BE III thus, grabbed the coveted Men’s Doubles Winners title.

Other “power” matches include the fierce combat between Apoorv (BE IV)  and Mohit Singh(Bsc) with Mohit making it the semis but got a tad unlucky with Jivitesh( BE III) winning a slight edge over him. In another set of matches, Gaurav smashed Vinayak and Viren in straight two sets and made an easy access to the semis. Quarter Finals also witnessed Siddharth  on a one-on-one take over Jivitesh with the latter winning the laurels for a show-stealing performance. The day also saw a string of forehand smashes by Anshul-Vinayak against the favourites, Chinmay-Nikhil where the latter looked like giving a perfect start but lost marginally. The Quarter Final match between Apoorv-Manu and Vivek-Sanjeev was an intensified display of team spirit “personified” with the latter emerging as the match stealers.

A mix of aggressive and judicious play, witnessing players exhibiting their ultra intensified moves and tactics was a sheer visceral joy. The three days sports saga can indeed be termed as a rollercoaster ride. Sincere thanks to Rahul Shindekar, Milap(dunno his surname) , and Nikhil( dunno again) , our coordinators and officials for the event. And, Shivangi Sinha, Aditya Vishnu and Pratyush for keeping pace with us, and acting as referees. The rousing response from the students was indeed commendable. Special vote of thanks to Niharika Gupta for her unflinching support and encouragement.

Kudos to all Winners…

Wishing you more such victories in future.

-Anjali Awasthi.

VOLLEYBALL:

BE VIII VS BE IV (BOYS):

The finals of volleyball attracted lots of audience. The crowd was cheering loudly and supporting the respective teams. In the first match, BE IV scored the first point easily. But the seniors wouldn’t give it up that early and the serve break was easy to get. After this there were continuous rally with Rohit serving from the BE IV side and Souryajeet trying to smash the ball as many times as he could. For the BE VIII batch it was Ravi and Chinmay taking turns to serve. Manu and Churi were the net players with Churi setting the ball for Manu to attack it. Many attempts by Manu to score a point was blocked by Mridul on the other side. BE VIII thought of a strategy to defeat BE IV but unfortunately that didnt work out that well as BE VIII lost the first match by 25-17.

The second match was a one sided match with the score being  7-0 and BE IV winning it all.

In all it was a good match and all the members showed tremendous sportmans spirit and brilliant performance but every competition has to have a winner.

BE VIII VS BE VI (GIRLS):

In the first match BE VI were clearly the winners with the scores being 25-13. Shailja single handedly defeated BE VIII with her powerful serves .Though Swati from BE VIII was trying her best ,the coordination in the team was not good and this made them lose the match. The match was fun to watch.

The second match turned out to be interesting with everybody contributing in the game and not just Shailja and Swati struggling to score for their teams.BE VIII buckled up and came back with a bang. Ananya from BE VIII proved to be a strong contender to Shailja when it came to serving. She bagged quite a few points because of her serves. Khyati and Pooja were at the net for BE VIII and BE VI respectively. They came handy in passing the ball to the other court and the audience did witness some brilliant shots. It was a close match with the scores being 24-23 but BE VI were quick to score that single point and seal their win.

BE VI were the clear winners but we saw live examples of Woman Power.

-Kriti Bhargava

VOLLEYBALL (The last match with the Teachers)

The volleyball mania ensued even after the final match was over. The players wanted to play more, while newcomers (including girls) were too interested to get the feel of the game. Even the teachers could not resist, and one could see the volleyball ground as a common platform for students and teachers to interact.

Hence, in no time an informal match began, with seven players on each side, against the normal rule of six. While teachers’ team consisted of Mr. Rajeev Ranjan, Mr. P.S. Rathore, Mr. Goswami, Mr. Tiju Thomas, Mr. Kamlesh, Mr. Rohitash Singh and Mr. Deep Chandra, Mr. Hari singh also hit the all occasionally. Students, being larger in number, and keener to gambol, exchanged places, main players being Ashish Galav, Nikhil, vivek, Varun, Amrendra, Ritesh. Victor Choudhary, a member of BIT family, who graduated last year, was also present and joined hand with the students’ team.

The spectators, mostly BE students, were mystified as they viewed their lecturers beyond the mundane courses of communications, machines, etc.  While control system of Rathore Sir was working perfectly, as he acquired the role of a smasher, Rajeev Ranjan Sir’s wireless antennas and sensors steered the ball without any apparent effort. In those light moments, Rajeev Sir’s candid remarks could often be heard like “Oh! Sorry” on missing a shot and “Hello” for making others alert. Goswami Sir, who takes the courses on micro controllers, and who had been persuaded by students to land on the court, lost the control of the ball once, which then got veered towards the girl spectators with a menacing speed and orientation; no casualties however were reported. Mr. Tiju was mainly serving the ball at enormous processing speed, while Kamlesh Sir left no stone unturned to lift the ball. The day ended with the conclusion of all the games and a display of the so far concealed talent of the teachers.
